With 6<br \/>\nhours to travel about 90km, we had time to visit some family and see<br \/>\nsome sights. Our first stop was Lake Hawea, where Andy &#038; Mike&#8217;s cousin<br \/>\nScott was holidaying with his wife and family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Family.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Family.jpg\" title=\"Family\" alt=\"Family\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From left to right:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Andy<\/li>\n<li>Scott<\/li>\n<li>Jonty<\/li>\n<li>Thomas (Tom-Tom)<\/li>\n<li>Trudi<\/li>\n<li>Mike<\/li>\n<li>Yours Truly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lake Hawea is a hydroelectric lake, but of course is just as scenic as<br \/>\nthe rest of the South Island.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Lake_Hawea.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Lake_Hawea.jpg\" title=\"Lake Hawea\" alt=\"Lake Hawea\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Andy didn&#8217;t have his camera so borrowed mine. We stopped for a look and had a beer at a goldfields museum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Kawarau_River_Goldfields_Bridge_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Kawarau_River_Goldfields_Bridge_01.jpg\" title=\"Kawarau River Goldfields Bridge\" alt=\"Kawarau River Goldfields Bridge\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Kawarau_River_Goldfields_Bridge_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Kawarau_River_Goldfields_Bridge_02.jpg\" title=\"Kawarau River Goldfields Bridge\" alt=\"Kawarau River Goldfields Bridge\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being near Queenstown, of course there was a jetboat below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Kawarau_River_Jetboat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Kawarau_River_Jetboat.jpg\" title=\"Kawarau River Jetboat\" alt=\"Kawarau River Jetboat\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we made it to Arrowtown, we checked out the old Chinese settlement from the gold-mining era.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Arrowtown_Chinese_Settlement_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Arrowtown_Chinese_Settlement_01.jpg\" title=\"Arrowtown Chinese Settlement\" alt=\"Arrowtown Chinese Settlement\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Arrowtown_Chinese_Settlement_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Arrowtown_Chinese_Settlement_02.jpg\" title=\"Arrowtown Chinese Settlement\" alt=\"Arrowtown Chinese Settlement\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then we went into town, where we looked at the old buildings, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Arrowtown_Real_Estate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Arrowtown_Real_Estate.jpg\" title=\"Arrowtown Real Estate\" alt=\"Arrowtown Real Estate\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Andy went shopping, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Arrowtown_Main_Street.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Arrowtown_Main_Street.jpg\" title=\"Arrowtown Main Street\" alt=\"Arrowtown Main Street\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and Mike and I had an Amstel, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Arrowtown_Amstel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Arrowtown_Amstel.jpg\" title=\"Arrowtown Amstel\" alt=\"Arrowtown Amstel\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and admired the view.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/images\/Wanaka_to_Queenstown\/Arrowtown_Backdrop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/WtQSmall\/Arrowtown_Backdrop.jpg\" title=\"Arrowtown Backdrop\" alt=\"Arrowtown Backdrop\" align=\"middle\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The photos stop here, but we were running late and made a dash for Queenstown airport. We had to fill the rental car before returning it and ended up at the busiest petrol station on the South Island. We made it to the airport where we had to rearrange all the bags to get the weights correct. By the time we got to the gate the terminal door had been closed but we talked them into re-opening it for us and we made it onto the plane for the flight to Christchurch.<\/p>\n<p>After 20 minutes there, we were on the flight to Napier which got us in at about 8:30pm last night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The air show over, we packed up our room and hit the road.
